Day 4- Habitat (Teacher's Guide)
Activate background knowledge by filling more information into the class KWL chart or graphic organizer including previous lessons.
Introduce new vocabulary for this lesson (habitat, biome, environment)
The team activity for this day is a whole class activity (Toothpick Activity).
Prep: Scatter colored toothpicks around in the grass outside the classroom. 20 green, 20 red, 20 yellow, 20 blue
Explain that each team of students is a bird. The birds have babies in their nests and the babies are REALLY HUNGRY. The birds must find worms for their babies to eat! Each team will line up in a straight line. The students will run down to the section where the worms (toothpicks) are and gather as many toothpicks as they can in thirty seconds. After thirty seconds, the "birds" must run back to their team and tag the next person in for thirty seconds. The bird that has the most worms for their babies at the end of the competition wins!
After the activity have the students go inside and work in their teams to fill out the worksheet below. Make sure to have a class chart like the one on the handout where each team can record their findings. Everyone needs to know the number of worms in each color that every other team collected.
